How to reach us
By plane:
- Riga International Airport (RIX) – the main Latvian hub, with frequent connections across Europe. It’s about 20–30 minutes from the centre by taxi or public bus.
- Kaunas/Vilnius airports (Lithuania) and Tallinn Airport (Estonia) are alternatives for regional itineraries with frequent bus lines to Riga.
By train:
Riga’s Central Station connects the capital with major Latvian cities (e.g., Jūrmala/Tukums, Sigulda, Cēsis, Daugavpils). International rail options are limited but expanding, so check current schedules if coming from abroad.
By bus:
Long-distance coaches (e.g., Lux Express, Ecolines, FlixBus) connect Riga with Tallinn, Vilnius, Kaunas, Warsaw, and other European cities. The International Bus Station is next to the Central Market and Old Town.
By car:
Riga is easily reached from neighbouring countries via well-maintained roads. Parking is available in designated street zones and garages, for example, Park-and-Ride lots offer affordable alternatives.

Riga, the capital and largest city of Latvia, was founded in 1201. Its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau and 19th-century wooden architecture. The city is welcoming and calm, with nice parks and river promenades.
Public transport is easy to navigate, and museums and cultural venues are never far away. So, whether you love architecture, budget-friendly attractions, or discovering Baltic culture, Riga offers a rich, inspiring environment for learning and reflection!
1) Wander the Old Town (Vecrīga)
Vecrīga is a maze of medieval streets, guildhalls, and cozy squares. Its highlights include Riga Cathedral, St. Peter’s Church, and the House of the Blackheads. You may stop for coffee on a cobbled plaza and soak up the atmosphere.
2) Ride the St. Peter’s Church Tower lift
For the city’s classic panorama: red rooftops, the Daugava River, and the Central Market’s iconic hangars – take the lift to the viewing platform. It’s the easiest way to understand Riga’s layout at first glance.
3) Explore the Central Market
Housed in former Zeppelin hangars, this is one of Europe’s largest markets. Sample Latvian rye bread, smoked fish, seasonal berries, local cheeses, and sweet pastries. It is great for an inexpensive lunch and people-watching.
4) Discover Art Nouveau on Albert Street
Riga is one of Europe’s capitals of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil). So, stroll along Albert Street and nearby streets to admire elaborate facades, then visit the Art Nouveau Museum for interiors and context.
5) Taste a classic Latvian dessert
Try Rūpjmaizes kārtojums (layers of dark rye breadcrumbs with whipped cream and fruit or jam) or warm up with a sip of Riga Black Balsam, a traditional herbal liqueur served plain or in hot drinks.
6) National Museum of Art
This beautifully restored building presents Latvian art from the 18th century to the present day. Clear curation, temporary exhibitions, and a rooftop view make it a rewarding cultural stop.
7) Walk to the Freedom Monument
The Freedom Monument is a must-visit as it is Riga’s national symbol. It honours soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920), and it is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Latvia.
8) Corner House (KGB Building)
The former KGB headquarters hosts exhibits and guided tours that tell personal stories from the Soviet period: sobering, insightful, and important for understanding Latvia’s recent past.
9) Jūrmala
A short train ride takes you to a town with sandy beaches, pine forests, and classic wooden villas. Jūrmala is perfect for a half-day of fresh air after exploring museums and galleries.
10) Kalnciema Quarter
Across the river in Āgenskalns, the Kalnciema Quarter features lovingly restored 19th-century wooden houses, weekend markets, and cultural events: a cozy slice of local life.
