10 Best Things to Do in Bucharest

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania, located on the River Dâmbovița in the southeastern part of the country. Known for its eclectic architecture, the city blends medieval churches, grand neoclassical buildings, Communist-era structures, and modern designs.

Often referred to as the “Little Paris,” Bucharest earned this nickname due to its resemblance to the French capital, particularly its wide boulevards and elegant architecture. Historically, it was known as the “Paris of the East” and played a significant role in Romania’s cultural and political development, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries.

As the cultural, political, and economic hub of Romania, Bucharest is home to several key landmarks, such as the Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, and the historic Old Town (Lipscani), famous for its charming streets and cultural sites. The city also offers a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theatres, and galleries. Additionally, Bucharest features green spaces like Herăstrău Park and the Village Museum.

The city is also famous for its nightlife and food, with a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Local dishes such as sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) and mici (grilled sausages) are Romanian favorites.

1) Palace of the Parliament

The Palace of the Parliament, also known as the People’s House, is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world. It was constructed during the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu, the communist dictator, and it remains one of Bucharest’s most iconic landmarks. The building’s architectural design combines neoclassical and Romanian traditions. Visitors can take guided tours to explore its magnificent halls, lavish rooms, and grand staircases.

2) Herastrau Park (King Michael I Park)

Herastrau Park is the largest park in Bucharest and a perfect place for outdoor activities. Located on the shores of Lake Herastrau, the park offers scenic walking paths, boat rentals, playgrounds, and cafes.

It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city, with lush green areas and beautiful views of the lake. The park also features the Village Museum and the Floreasca Boat Club.

3) Romanian Athenaeum

The Romanian Athenaeum is a stunning concert hall and one of the most important landmarks in Bucharest. Built-in the late 19th century in neoclassical style, this majestic building is home to the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra.

4) The Village Museum (Muzeul Satului)

The Village Museum is an open-air museum located in Herastrau Park, showcasing Romania’s rural life and traditional architecture. Visitors can explore over 300 houses, barns, and churches from different regions of Romania, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The museum offers an immersive experience of Romanian folklore, customs, and agricultural practices.

5) Old Town (Lipscani District)

Bucharest’s Old Town, known as Lipscani, is a lively area filled with cobbled streets, cafes, restaurants, and bars. The district is home to historic landmarks such as the Stavropoleos Monastery and the National Bank of Romania.

It is a great place to stroll through, enjoy a meal at a traditional Romanian tavern, or explore antique shops and art galleries.

6) National Museum of Art of Romania

The National Museum of Art, housed in the former Royal Palace, is one of the most significant cultural institutions in Romania. It boasts an extensive collection of Romanian medieval and modern art, as well as European art from renowned artists like Rembrandt, El Greco, and Rubens. The museum provides a deep insight into Romania’s artistic history and the evolution of European art.

7) Triumph Arch (Arcul de Triumf)

Inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Triumph Arch in Bucharest was built to commemorate Romania’s victories in World War I. Located at the northern end of Kiseleff Road, this impressive structure stands 27 meters tall and is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Visitors can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city.

8) National History Museum of Romania
