European Union’s Education agenda highlights the need to improve learning experiences for all students by removing barriers and providing equal opportunities to learn.

Yet, in today’s classrooms, identifying those barriers can be difficult.

Therefore, how do we set and carry out assignments that are fair and equitable to all?

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a powerful framework to address these challenges by helping teachers identify and eliminate barriers, fostering equitable opportunities for all learners.

This course is designed to empower educators with the knowledge and tools to create real-world connections that ignite curiosity and promote respect for the environment, all shaped by UDL practices.

UDL can also transform how to teach sustainability and environmental awareness.

By engaging students in projects that spark their passion – such as community clean-ups or creative storytelling – learning becomes dynamic and meaningful, moving beyond traditional curricula.

Providing students with diverse ways to demonstrate their knowledge, like art or digital presentations, empowers them to take action and make a tangible impact in their communities.

Participants will also explore innovative technologies that support UDL strategies, promote collaboration, and offer students diverse pathways to express their learning and connect deeply with their surroundings.

Furthermore, participants will embark on an outdoor learning adventure, discovering Tenerife’s stunning landscapes while gaining inspiration for immersive teaching approaches.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design inclusive lesson plans that meet diverse learner needs and develop strategies to integrate sustainability concepts into their curricula.

Finally, they will be equipped to integrate digital tools that enhance representation, engagement, and expression in their teaching practices.

Learning outcomes

The course will help participants to:

• Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create inclusive lesson plans for diverse learners;
• Facilitate immersive learning experiences using Tenerife’s natural and historical sites to enhance student engagement;
• Incorporate digital technologies to provide varied representation and expression in their teaching practices;
• Develop strategies to integrate sustainability concepts into their curricula, fostering environmental responsibility among students.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to the course

• Introduction to the course, the school, and the external activities;
• Icebreaker activities;
• Presentations of the participants’ schools;
• Introduction to Universal Design for Learning.

Day 2 – La Laguna – historical and cultural connections

• Discover La Laguna (UNESCO World Heritage Site) through the UDL principle of Multiple Forms of Representation to make content accessible to diverse classrooms;
• Explore digital tools for collaborative learning.

Day 3 – Tenerife Coast – sensory engagement and exploration

• Excursion to Tenerife’s coastal area;
• Learn about the UDL’s Multiple Means of Engagement and apply these to learn about the environment through a variety of senses (touch, smell, observation).

Day 4 – Sustainability and environmental awareness

• Excursion to Anaga Rural Park – Tenerife’s ancient laurel forests;
• Explore the benefits of Multiple Means of Action and expression to engage students and use all of their talents and strengths;
• Dive into a variety of digital learning tools for natural sciences.

Day 5 – Summary

• Applying knowledge and skills gained to participants’ own contexts.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

• Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
• Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
• Excursion and other external cultural activities.
