Despite sustained policy efforts, literacy levels are stagnating or worsening across much of the EU. Students’ ability to comprehend texts, interpret information, and engage critically with written material appears to be weakening at a time when strong literacy skills are more essential than ever.

Compared with previous decades, young people are reading less frequently and often struggle to extract meaning from complex texts.

At the same time, schools expect learners to navigate information-rich and digitally complex environments with confidence and critical awareness.

Of course, literacy shouldn’t be a responsibility only of language teachers. It is instead the foundation of all learning. In fact, across all subjects, students are required to read academic texts, interpret data, use specific vocabulary, and convey their ideas clearly.

For this reason, this course returns to essential research-informed practices that can make every teacher a teacher of literacy, supporting effective learning across all areas.

Participants will be guided in exploring how reading, writing, vocabulary development, and structured discussion can be implemented and embedded into everyday subject teaching in realistic and sustainable ways.

Guided reflection, collaborative tasks, and hands-on planning activities will be adopted to help participants design scaffolded lessons, inclusive strategies, and formative assessment tools that support every learner effectively, according to their specific skills and needs (e.g., including multilingual students and struggling readers).

That’s the reason why, during the course, particular attention will be given to differentiation, curriculum coherence, and alignment with the European Key Competences for Lifelong Learning.

By the end of it, participants will be able to return to their institutions equipped with greater methodological confidence, strengthened professional competencies, and effective tools to foster literacy, engagement, and academic achievement across the curriculum.

Learning outcomes

The course will help participants to:

• Define literacy as a cross-curricular competence and understand its role in supporting learning across all subject areas;
• Integrate reading, writing, vocabulary, and academic language strategies into subject teaching to strengthen comprehension and communication;
• Design learner-centered, scaffolded lessons and assessments that embed literacy objectives within curriculum planning;
• Differentiate instruction and apply inclusive practices to support diverse learners, including multilingual students and struggling readers;
• Use formative assessment and feedback techniques to monitor literacy development and improve student outcomes;
• Develop a practical implementation plan and resource toolkit for immediate application and sustainable professional growth.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to the course and foundations of literacy

• Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
• Icebreaker activities;
• Presentations of the participants’ schools;
• Understanding literacy as a whole-school, cross-curricular competence;
• Defining literacy beyond language arts: reading, writing, and vocabulary;
• Literacy and the European Key Competences for Lifelong Learning;
• The teacher’s role as a “teacher of literacy” in every subject;
• Reflective audit of current practice and identification of personal goals.

Day 2 – Reading and comprehension strategies across subjects

• Supporting students to access and understand complex texts and information;
• Teaching comprehension explicitly: before–during–after reading strategies;
• Working with subject-specific vocabulary;
• Scaffolding complex texts, tasks, and instructions;
• Critical thinking and questioning techniques;
• Designing reading activities for authentic classroom materials.

Day 3 – Writing and communication strategies across subjects

• Writing-to-learn and structured communication to deepen understanding;
• Writing as a tool for thinking and knowledge construction;
• Writing-to-learn routines (summaries, reflections, explanations);
• Teaching subject-specific genres (reports, explanations, arguments, essays);
• Integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing in reporting/presenting.

Day 4 – Differentiation, inclusion, and assessment for literacy

• Meeting diverse learner needs and monitoring progress;
• Differentiation techniques for mixed-ability classrooms;
• Supporting multilingual learners and struggling readers;
• Formative assessment and feedback strategies;
• Designing inclusive activities and formative assessment tools.

Day 5 – Curriculum integration and planning

• Embedding literacy goals into curriculum planning;
• Designing cross-curricular or project-based learning units;
• Collaborative lesson planning and peer feedback;
• Developing ready-to-use resources and templates;
• Creating a personalized Action and Implementation Plan.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

• Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
• Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
• Excursion and other external cultural activities.
