Fostering a Culture of Nonviolence and Human Rights in Adult Education

Conflicts, misunderstandings, and intolerance are part of everyday life, not only in classrooms, but in training centers and community spaces too.

These situations can also open the way to powerful opportunities to learn to engage with diversity, approach diversity, cope with conflict in a constructive way, and practice respect for human rights.

Whether in adult education, or civil society initiatives, educators and trainers are more than ever called upon to foster dialogue, empathy, and conflict resolution.

This course aims to offer participants an articulated set of practical practices to peace education and nonviolence, designed for a wide range of contexts and everyday applications.

Moving beyond traditional approaches to conflict management, participants will explore tools and innovative methods to prevent conflict, mediate disagreements, promote empathy, dialogue, and cooperation, creating a culture of nonviolence and mutual respect in both formal and non-formal or community contexts.

Balancing theory and practice, participants will experiment with conflict-sensitive communication, mediation techniques, and rights-based approaches.

They will engage in interactive workshops, roleplay scenarios, group discussions, and case studies drawing on real examples from schools, NGOs, and intercultural projects.

They will learn how to recognize and deal with discriminatory behavior, how to engage in dialogues with people from different backgrounds, and how to always promote inclusive participation, reflecting at the same time on their own usual responses to conflict.

By the end, participants will leave with practical knowledge and tools to design and facilitate learning experiences that promote nonviolence, human rights, and social cohesion.

They will be prepared not only to manage conflict more effectively, but also to create a culture of cooperation and respect in any kind of possible environment, being able to adapt their approaches to a range of different audiences and sensibilities.

Learning outcomes

The course will help participants to:

• Explain and contextualize the principles of peace education, nonviolence, and human rights in both formal and non-formal settings;
• Recognize potential sources of conflict, intolerance, and exclusion, and reflect critically on their own role in addressing them;
• Apply practical tools for conflict-sensitive communication, mediation, and collaborative problem-solving in educational and community environments;
• Design and facilitate activities (e.g., roleplays, structured dialogues, group projects) that promote empathy, cooperation, and respect for diversity;
• Integrate rights-based and peacebuilding approaches into lesson planning, training modules, or community initiatives;
• Promote inclusion and social cohesion by adopting strategies that ensure participation of learners from diverse backgrounds;
• Transfer learning into practice by developing context-specific action plans for fostering calm, empathy, and cooperation in challenging or emotionally charged situations.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to the course and peacebuilding education

• Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
• Icebreaker activities;
• Presentations of the participants’ schools;
• Overview of peacebuilding principles and human rights, and their relationship with different settings (formal, informal, etc);
• Group discussion: analyzing and mapping participants’ contexts (school, NGO, civil society) and the challenges they face, discussing ways to foster nonviolence, empathy, and respect.

Day 2 – Understanding conflict and diversity

• Exploring sources and dynamics of conflict, intolerance, and exclusion in diverse environments;
• Case studies: how identity, culture, and background can influence misunderstandings;
• Group workshop: identifying conflict triggers and analyzing real-life situations from schools and community projects.

Day 3 – Conflict-sensitive communication and mediation techniques

• Overview of conflict-sensitive communication, facilitation, and mediation approaches;
• Roleplay and simulation: practicing dialogue and nonviolent problem-solving strategies;
• Group activity: drafting small interventions to prevent escalation in classrooms or training sessions.

Day 4 – Human rights in practice

• Practical approaches to integrate human rights values into daily teaching, training, and group facilitation;
• Workshop: designing inclusive activities that promote empathy, cooperation, and participation;
• Peer exchange: sharing tools and practices across school and non-formal education settings.

Day 5 – From learning to action

• The educator’s role in promoting equity, social cohesion, and peace in schools and communities;
• Action planning: drafting individual or institutional strategies to apply the course competences in participants’ contexts;
• Group discussion: what changes can be made immediately, and what requires long-term planning.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

• Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
• Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
• Excursion and other external cultural activities.
