Community Learning Centers (neighbourhood houses, community hubs, local centers) are open, welcoming spaces that offer educational, social participation, and recreational programs for local communities.

They encourage lifelong learning, community engagement, and personal development. Typically, they are the heart of local life, helping people connect, learn, and thrive together.

They can operate in a wide range of places such as public buildings, schools, libraries, and community halls, even flats, shipping containers, or adapted post-industrial sites.

What unites them is how they are used – flexibly, creatively, and always in response to the local context.

This course explores the functioning of community centres in Poland.

During the course, participants will have the opportunity to visit real existing community centers from Gdańsk, meet their staff, volunteers, and community leaders,  learn more about their activities, challenges, and good practices.

They will also learn more about the Gdańsk Model of Neighborhood Houses developed by the city itself and local non-governmental organizations.

Thanks to the course, participants will understand how Community Centers operate, and they will develop practical skills in mobilizing communities, designing educational programs, and fostering civic participation.

These competencies will enable them to create impactful community-driven initiatives in their own local communities.

Learning outcomes

The course will help participants to:

• Understand the operational model of Neighborhood Houses in Gdańsk as community hubs;
• Develop strategies for engaging local communities through education and civic initiatives;
• Design a prototype model for a community center with educational programs tailored to diverse target groups and their needs;
• Create actionable plans for establishing or improving community centers in their regions.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to the course

• Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
• Icebreaker activities;
• Presentations of the participants’ organizations.

Community Center in a nutshell

• Overview of the concept of Community Centers/ Neighborhood Houses;
• Presentation on their role in fostering education and community engagement.

Day 2 – Workshop on community engagement

• Techniques for mobilizing local communities;
• Case studies from Gdańsk’s Neighborhood Houses;
• Interactive session: Designing initiatives for local communities.

Day 3 – Observing community practices

• Visit a Neighborhood House in Gdańsk;
• Guided tour of facilities and observation of ongoing activities (e.g., workshops or events);
• Discussion with staff about operational challenges and successes.

Day 4 – Exploring civic engagement models

• Visit another Neighborhood House;
• Participation in selected activities (e.g., intergenerational workshops or civic meetings);
• Reflective group discussion on lessons learned from both visits.

Day 5 – Workshop: designing your own community center

• Identifying key needs in participants’ communities;
• Developing action plans inspired by Gdańsk’s model;
• Presentation of project ideas.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

• Course evaluation: round up of acquired competences, feedback, and discussion;
• Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
• Excursion and other external cultural activities.
