Description

Young learners often have a natural sense of fairness and justice.

This offers an excellent starting point to introduce them to key concepts and crucial ideas such as rules, rights, responsibilities, and the purpose and role of law in society.

For this very reason, this course is designed to support teachers in exploring how everyday school rules can be used as a bridge to explain legal concepts in an accessible and meaningful way.

It will give them the tools and confidence to help their students make sense of school rules and understand their personal rights, obligations, as well as legal issues in the outside world, such as consent, bullying, and the age of legal responsibility.

Throughout the week, by using everyday school rules as a metaphor to illustrate how law works in the real world, teachers will help their pupils to think through the possible consequences of “mistakes” and infringements, in educational contexts, social media, and in the real world, and their potential legal and social consequences.

Participants will engage in hands-on activities as: mock trials (illustrating procedures for dealing with rule/law breakers); rule making exercises (to show how rules/laws are made for the situation they are meant to address) and age-appropriate discussions on the themes of coherent sanctions or punishments, fairness and justice, incidentally introducing the possibility of future careers in the police and court systems.

These methods and practical approaches, together with expert Q&A sessions and analysis of case studies, will help students explore how rules and laws are created, interpreted, and applied in real-life situations, while developing critical thinking and social awareness.

Particular attention will then be given to themes such as digital citizenship and online safety, including how to recognise and address issues such as cyberbullying, harassment, and misuse of personal data.

Also, participants will explore ways to introduce basic legal terminology through relatable examples and age-appropriate language and classroom resources.

The course combines discussion, case studies, and collaborative planning to help teachers design learning activities that promote responsibility, fairness, and informed decision-making.

By the end of it, participants will be better equipped and more confident in their abilities to explain legal ideas in ways that young people can more easily understand and relate to, and have clarity on how to promote social responsibility and help keep themselves and others safe from cyber danger.
