Description
When assessment and teaching are disconnected, teachers risk losing essential feedback on their students’ learning (their readiness and performance) and their own practices.
This course will explore how meaningful assessment can help teachers better inform instruction, clarify learning goals, and strengthen the link between what is taught in class and what students actually learn.
During this course, participants will examine the relationship between teaching and testing, exploring how assessment can become a tool for improving, and not just measuring, learning.
Thanks to a mix of theory and practice, they will learn to use pre-assessment techniques to identify prior knowledge and readiness in their students, and to design classroom tests that provide reliable, valid, and actionable evidence of learning.
In this course will be presented a practical three-step process for building effective assessments;
Determine the instructional decisions to be made;
Identify the test-based inferences needed to support those decisions;
Design tests that yield valid, meaningful information.
Using this, teachers will be able to analyze common pitfalls in test design (such as ambiguous wording or unnecessary complexity) and practice strategies to avoid them.
By the end of the course, participants will have learnt how to design and apply classroom assessments closely aligned with learning objectives.
They will learn how to analyze assessment results to shape their teaching, identify students’ needs, measure students’ performance, and reflect on their teaching effectiveness.
Use pre-assessment to identify students’ readiness and prior knowledge;
Examine how assessment can inform decisions related to teaching (measuring teaching effectiveness, checking students’ learning, and clarifying the curriculum);
Design tests using a clear three-step process: define instructional decisions; identify required test-based inferences; build tests that yield valid evidence;
Differentiate and select appropriate item types (e.g., selected-response, constructed-response, performance tasks) based on the different purposes of each;
Write and revise test items to avoid ambiguity and unnecessary complexity;
Explore common pitfalls in test writing and learn how to avoid them.

Day 3 – Mastering test building
The three-step process for test building;
Selected-response item vs. constructed-response items and their purposes;
Avoiding common pitfalls in test-building.
Day 4 – From score to strategy
Developing rubrics for open-ended questions;
Analyzing sample test data to determine appropriate instructional strategies for upcoming lessons.
Day 5 – Assessment as a tool for professional tool
Participants develop a test and share it with colleagues for feedback;
Discussions and final thoughts on how assessment results help teachers improve their teaching practices and seek professional development opportunities.
Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities
Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
