Description
The School Library has transformed from a space filled only with books to a technology center.
With the rise of artificial intelligence and digital tools, the role of school librarians has evolved.
Today, they combat misinformation and perform a range of other activities by guiding students through a world of manipulated content and AI-generated information.
However, in the midst of these changes, some key questions arise: How do we best merge both worlds, the analog and the digital, in the library? How can we combat fake news in the library while using digital tools ethically?
This course equips school librarians with practical strategies to challenge misinformation and fake news while exploring AI and digital archives as investigative tools.
Through a combination of practice and theory, librarians will learn about tools that can help them engage students and value the school library as a place of critical inquiry.
By the end of the course, school librarians will have gained hands-on experience to help students identify misinformation, evaluate digital sources, and understand the impact of technology on reading and writing in the school setting.
Ultimately, participants will have acquired knowledge about methods for integrating digital historical tools into library programs and how to assist teachers in enhancing digital literacy in the school.
Design and implement library activities that promote digital source evaluation, historical thinking, and the responsible use of AI-generated content;
Develop instructional strategies that emphasize the value of analog tools (such as printed books, handwriting, and archival materials) as necessary complements to digital learning, propelling deeper critical engagement and responsible comparison between formats;
Empower students to assess the credibility, origin, and intent of both digital and knowledge sources through media analysis and source evaluation techniques;
Collaborate with classroom teachers to enhance cross-curricular digital literacy initiatives that develop critical thinking, media awareness, and ethical research habits.

Day 1 – Introduction to the course

Day 2 – Comparison methods – analog versus digital
Strategies to foster the value of the analog materials;
Digital Tools to use in the library;
Activities to merge both worlds.
Day 3 – AI and the library
Critical thinking and learning how AI works;
Strengths and weaknesses of AI;
AI tools for librarians and for students.
Day 4 – Reading and writing in the digital
Teaching students how and why they should still know how to read and write;
Surpassing AI limitations and valuing human thinking;
