AI Chatbots for Teaching and Learning: From Lesson Design to Interactive Tutoring

Teachers are overwhelmed by the number of AI chatbots available and don’t know which ones to use, how to use them pedagogically, or how to integrate them responsibly into everyday teaching.

Among others, participants will explore a range of leading chatbot platforms, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and other emerging AI tools, learning how they can support lesson planning, student engagement, assessment, and classroom management.

Through live demonstrations, guided practice, and collaborative projects, participants will gain hands-on experience with different chatbot interfaces.

This way, they’ll be able to compare their strengths, limitations, and educational applications.

Combining practical technology training with essential pedagogical foundations, this course will help teachers use chatbots confidently and in a responsible way during their everyday classroom routines.

During the course, participants will be introduced to the basics of AI and chatbot functionality, effective prompt design, strategies for creating interactive learning activities and materials, and ways to integrate chatbots to support differentiation and personalized learning, all while addressing ethical considerations such as academic integrity, privacy, transparency, and bias.  

Participants will also have the chance to design and create their own chatbot-based activities and experiment with building simple educational tools tailored to their subjects.

They will also compare and evaluate multiple chatbot platforms, gaining insight into their special features and classroom applications (e.g., using them as their “assistants” for administration and classroom management), and they will explore how chatbots can assist with administrative tasks, feedback, communication, and workload reduction.

By the end of the course, participants will have developed a prototype chatbot and implementation plan ready for classroom use. They will focus on their individual teaching contexts and future trends in education technology, which will prepare them to lead AI innovation in their schools or organizations.

Learning outcomes

The course will help participants to:

• Understand the educational potential of AI chatbots, including how they work and how they can support teaching, learning, and classroom management;
• Compare and select appropriate chatbot tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) based on their features, strengths, and classroom applications;
• Design and implement chatbot-assisted learning activities tailored to different age groups, subjects, and learning objectives;
• Integrate chatbots into teacher workflows, including lesson planning, differentiation, assessment support, communication, and administrative tasks;
• Promote safe, ethical, and responsible AI use, developing classroom guidelines that address privacy, bias, transparency, and academic integrity;
• Create a prototype educational chatbot or activity, ready to be tested and adapted in their own school context.

Tentative schedule

Day 1 – Introduction to the course

• Introduction to the course, the school, and the external week activities;
• Icebreaker activities;
• Presentations of the participants’ schools.

AI chatbots for education

• What is a chatbot? Rule-based systems, AI-powered chatbots, and large language models (LLMs);
• Overview of educational uses across subjects and age groups;
• Demonstration of major Chatbots: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

Day 2 – Using chatbots for teaching and learning

• Writing effective prompts;
• Designing lesson plans, quizzes, and rubrics;
• Differentiation and personalization: adapting instructions, difficulty levels, and support materials;
• Assessment and ethical use of AI in schools.

Day 3 – Chatbots as students’ tutors

• Generating study guides, summaries, and language practice;
• Designing chatbot-powered formative feedback tools;
• Creating interactive tutoring dialogues and simulations (e.g., historical figures, science explanations, role-play).

Day 4 – Chatbots as teachers’ assistants

• Creating differentiated teaching materials (texts, exercises, explanations);
• Problem-solving for daily teaching challenges: behaviour notes, communication templates, parent summaries;
• Using chatbots for organisation and administration;
• Workshop: build your own “AI assistant” workflow for your subject.

Day 5 – Implementation, assessment, and future trends

• Steps for implementation in schools: resources, infrastructure, and teacher readiness;
• The SAMR model and Bloom’s Taxonomy adapted for AI-enhanced learning;
• Creating classroom AI policies: privacy, academic integrity, bias, and transparency;
• Final group activity: designing an implementation plan or prototype chatbot activity.

Day 6 – Course closure and cultural activities

• Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
• Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
• Excursion and other external cultural activities.
